Pharmacological properties

Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Meropenem exerts its action by penetrating bacterial cells readily and interfering with the synthesis of vital cell wall components, which leads to cell death.

For use as single agent therapy for the treatment of the following infections when caused by susceptible isolates of the designated microorganisms: complicated skin and skin structure infections due to Staphylococcus aureus (b-lactamase and non-b-lactamase producing, methicillin-susceptible isolates only), Streptococcus pyogenesStreptococcus agalactiae, viridans group streptococci, Enterococcus faecalis (excluding vancomycin-resistant isolates), Pseudomonas aeruginosaEscherichia coliProteus mirabilisBacteroides fragilis and Peptostreptococcusspecies; complicated appendicitis and peritonitis caused by viridans group streptococci, Escherichia coliKlebsiella pneumoniaePseudomonas aeruginosaBacteroides fragilisB. thetaiotaomicron, and Peptostreptococcus species. Also for use in the treatment of bacterial meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniaeHaemophilus influenzae (b-lactamase and non-b-lactamase-producing isolates), and Neisseria meningitidis.

Indications

Exipenem is indicated for the treatment of the following infections in adults and children aged 3 months and older:

• Severe pneumonia, including hospital and ventilator-associated pneumonia.

• Broncho-pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis

• Complicated urinary tract infections

• Complicated intra-abdominal infections

• Intra- and post-partum infections

• Complicated skin and soft tissue infections

• Acute bacterial meningitis

Meronem may be used in the management of neutropenic patients with fever that is suspected to be due to a bacterial infection.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common side effects may include:

  • headache;
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea;
  • anemia;
  • skin rash; or
  • swelling or irritation where the medicine was injected
